Hawaii Organizations Receive Nearly Half-a-Million Dollars To Help Homeless Veterans
Senator Akaka applauded a Department of Labor decision to award $478,000 in federal grant money to help two established Hawaii community service organizations reintegrate homeless veterans into the workforce. As Chairman of the United States Senate's Veterans' Affairs Committee, Akaka has pushed for increased funding to combat homelessness among veterans.
"Like other states, Hawaii faces challenges in ending the unacceptably high rate of homelessness among veterans," said Akaka. "The national economic downturn, combined with Hawaii's already high cost of living, makes it even more difficult for island veterans to make ends meet, and for local organizations to help them get on their feet. I am pleased that this federal grant money will be available to help these local organizations help those who have given so much for our nation."
The two organizations to receive federal funding under the recently announced DOL grants are Network Enterprises, based in Honolulu, and United States Veterans Initiative - Hawaii, based in Kapolei. more»
